Losing weight: Diet is the practice of eating in a regulated fashion to achieve a particular, long-term objective. The most common objective is loss of excess body fat. Weight-loss diets restrict the intake of specific foods to reduce body weight. What works to reduce body weight for one person will not necessarily work for another, due to metabolic differences and lifestyle factors. World's fattest man Manuel Uribe loses 570 pounds
The world's fattest man had lost half his body weight after going on a low-carb diet. Manuel Uribe, who once weighed 90 stone, has shed under 41 stone since a tearful appeal for help on tv drew replies from doctors around the world. Medics from Italy and Spain offered to carry out gastric bypass surgery. But Uribe refused and accepted the help of US and Mexican doctors and nutritionists who prescribed a high-protein, low carb diet and exercise regime that he has followed for 2 years. Weight Loss success story - John Lapitz loses 600 pounds
John Lapitz lost 600 pounds with no fad diets, no liposuction and no gastric bypass. He told KETV that he is obsessive-compulsive, and that chipped in to his ballooning weight. "Sometimes I really wanted to die. I would sometimes go maybe 2-3 weeks without seeing anybody except my sister-in-law and the lady who delivered my Meals on Wheels." Fearing he wouldn't be able to make it to the bathroom by himself anymore, he said he resolved to cut his calorie intake in half. And then he tried something he believed he hated - vegetables. "One day I tried broccoli, and man, I loved it. I couldn't believe that I liked broccoli."

Man who lost more than 700 pounds suffers a setback
Man who made headlines for losing more than 700 pounds has lost ground in his effort to control his weight. Patrick Deuel said that he hasn't stepped on a scale since last summer, which was the last time he saw his doctor. Deuel, who once weighed 1,072 pounds, was down to 370 in November. Too many holiday sweets and his attempts to quit smoking have taken a toll since then. He guessed that he now weighs 425. "I feel a little heavier. I'm working through a lot of stuff right now." Deuel was so large in 2004 that a bedroom wall had to be cut out to extract him from his home.

Weight Loss Challenges
Shows like "The Biggest Loser" and "Celebrity Fit Club" have shown people the power of a challenge to help shed the pounds. Many groups of friends and co-workers are now making their own challenges. A group of 5 male co-workers from First Coast News decided to start their own challenge as a way to motivate each other to drop a few pounds. Each of the group members put $50 into a pot. Every week the person who losses the biggest percentage of weight wins $10. Then at the end of 15 weeks the winner takes home $100. "There's money involved so there is a big incentive for guys who are typically not motivated to loss weight."
