Weight Loss Diet: Healthy Eating, Losing Fat and Calories

Losing weight: Diet is the practice of eating in a regulated fashion to achieve a particular, long-term objective. The most common objective is loss of excess body fat. Weight-loss diets restrict the intake of specific foods to reduce body weight. What works to reduce body weight for one person will not necessarily work for another, due to metabolic differences and lifestyle factors. Today there are lot of quick weight loss products available, but not all of them are efficient.

Men and women metabolize fructose differently
Men and women seem to differ in how they metabolize high levels of fructose, a simple sugar used to sweeten drinks and foods. Short-term high fructose intake among men caused increased blood triglycerides (fats) and decreased insulin resistance, factors linked with an elevated risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In the men, fructose supplementation caused significant increases in 11 of the 12 factors, like 5% increase in fasting glucose and 71% increase in triglyceride levels. Women showed 4% increase in glucose and 16% increase in triglycerides after the high fructose diet.

5 natural ways to naturally rev up metabolism
(1) Stop eating 2-3 hours before bedtime. Giving your body a "mini fast and cleanse" allows digestive juices to burn excess waste material, thereby promoting weight loss and digestion. (4) Drink green tea daily. Green tea increases metabolic rate and speeds up fat oxidation. Compounds in green tea accelerate the rate at which calories are burned. (5) Supplement with 200 mcg of chromium daily. Research has shown that chromium can suppress appetite, help insulin function, balance blood sugar levels and control cravings.

The Right - and Wrong - Ways to Boost Metabolism
There are 7 common "facts" about boosting metabolism and losing weight. Some are true, some not. Children have a much faster metabolism while they grow, but metabolic rate declines with age. There has recently become a large industry in boosting your metabolism. All sorts of powders, pills, drinks and secret techniques have been promoted to raise your metabolic rate and help you burn fat. The trouble is, very few of these metabolism boosters work. The good news is that you can increase metabolism through exercise and fat-burning nutrition.

Managing Metabolism
If you exercise, cut back on calories and still can't lose weight, metabolism may be the problem. How well your metabolism works is determined by many factors, like as activity level, muscle to fat ratio, gender and age. Most experts agree, as we age metabolism slows. It could be what's behind 5-10 extra pounds. But the reality, dietitians say, is not what people want to hear. "Metabolism only slows down about 1-2% per decade." Maybe not as dramatic as many imagine, but it can make a difference - fortunately there are strategies to help keep your metabolism revved up.

Soy may help boost metabolism
Study suggests that soy consumption may reduce weight by increasing metabolism. "We wanted to compare the effects of soy protein hydrolysates and soy peptides with those of leptin, because we hypothesized that soy might behave in the body in a similar way. Leptin is a hormone produced that interacts with receptors in the brain and signals us that we're full so we stop eating," Elvira de Mejia said. "We found that soy did have an effect on these mechanisms and hormones that are induced in the body to help us degrade lipids and reduce body weight, but it did so by boosting metabolism and not by reducing food intake."

Raise metabolism - Increase the number of calories you burn daily
Everyone burns calories just by sitting still - that's called your resting metabolic rate (RMR). Gender is the only factor that determines your resting burn rate. The typical RMR for women is 1,200-1,500 calories per day. For men, 1,600-1,900 calories per day. Once you begin burning more calories than that, you are raising' your metabolism. It's easy to raise metabolism - just move your legs. The legs have the largest muscles in the body. Jogging one mile burns 100 calories. Body needs 1,200 calories per day to function, so your health will suffer if you ever consume less.

Boosting your metabolism
The timing and availability of food can affect the rate of calorie burning. When the body undergoes periods of food deprivation, it slows the metabolism in order to conserve calories. Activities such as yoyo dieting or skipping meals can set up this type of response by the body. This makes it more difficult to lose weight. If the body is so determined to protect itself from starvation, then how do we maximize our metabolism? One of the best responses is to be physically active. Muscle burns calories, so more muscle means more calorie-burning. Eat 3 meals with healthy snacks between. The body is then comfortable with consistent fuel and does not slow down.

What's known about metabolism
Metabolism gets plenty of blame and credit for its role in weight control, and in most cases, neither is entirely earned. Here's what experts know about making the process work more efficiently: The claim: Metabolic rates are fixed for life by genetics. What's known: Genes are a factor, but age, muscle-to-fat ratio and activity also influence metabolism. The claim: Men have fast metabolism. What's known: Men usually have less body fat, more muscle and a higher basal metabolic rate than women. As a result, they burn more calories at rest and when they're active.

Mastering Your Metabolism: Tricks To Burn Those Extra Calories
Some people are blessed with fast metabolisms, others are cursed by slow metabolisms - but for all age brings a metabolic slow down. Anyone can speed it up, if they learn how to master their metabolism. Studies have shown 3 light meals placed about 4 hours apart are the best boosters of metabolism - with some light snacks in between. Contrary to popular belief, the time you eat doesn't affect metabolism, and neither does eating late at night. Optimum metabolic meals follow the fuel formula: 30% protein, 30% good fats, 40% carbs. And whatever you do, don't starve yourself or diet too drastically.

Knowing your metabolism can kick-start weight-loss plan
If knowledge is power, Paula Franetti can empower you to shed those extra pounds you've put on in the last few years, and to keep them off for the rest of your life. She uses two new diagnostic tools to determine how many calories you burn in the course of a normal day, and how you burn them. Then she and dietitian Terri Spirk design diet and activity plans to fit your metabolic rate and your likes and dislikes. The first device ( called the Reevue, for resting energy expenditure view) can determine your resting metabolic rate by measuring how much oxygen you consume.

Fire Up Your Metabolism
Boosting your metabolism to help you lose weight is as simple as eating right, exercising and strength training. Even though increasing your metabolism can be as easy as exercising, Dr. Tiffany Gulinson has trouble getting her patients to move their bodies. "The main thing is to exercise and use some weights, but I'm not seeing my patients exercising. They want to do something that is easier, and many want a pill. I'd like to have my patients take the stairs rather than an elevator... or do any activity. But many are not doing it."

Can you really change your metabolism
Metabolism, the amount of energy body uses each day, can determine whether you will be successful in losing weight. So, is it possible to speed up your metabolism? Yes, although your metabolism is fairly stable, there are several things you can do to help rev it up. -- Space meals 3-4 hours apart. Metabolism excuse -- Exercise away your sluggish metabolism
Ah, the metabolism excuse. The one that ignores the fact that most overweight people eat too much and don't move enough. Right? Actually, Yavari says, a lot of his patients have indeed screwed up their metabolisms. Recently he tested a 27-year-old "who had the caloric burn rate of a 60-year-old." Yavari blames years of bad diets and yo-yo weight loss for making weight loss such a battle. "Some people may snicker a bit when an overweight person blames their metabolism. But the truth is ... they may be right." What's keeping many overweight from losing weight is a condition known as metabolic syndrome, a malfunction in the way the body breaks down food.

Why is loosing weight so difficult - Body fights back
It can be hard to diet. "Any dieter will tell you when you loose weight if feels like something in your body is fighting against you," said Dr. David E. Cummings. First, have you ever noticed how hard it is to fight fat and lose weight? It's not in your head, but in your body. Research found that when women exercised and lost weight, they had an increase in a hormone called ghrelin - a stomach hormone that increases appetite and reduces metabolic rate. The best way to stop this gremlin called ghrelin is to eat. And that's the good news: No matter what you eat, it really seems to lower the ghrelin level.
