How to lose weight without losing bone : Higher-protein diet
A higher-protein diet that stresses lean meats and low-fat dairy foods as sources of protein and calcium can mean weight loss without bone loss - and the evidence is in bone scans taken throughout a new study. "This is an important finding because many people, especially women in mid-life, are concerned with both obesity and osteoporosis. Furthermore, treating obesity often increases risk for osteoporosis. Many people lose bone mass when they lose weight," said Ellen Evans.

How to count your calories
Kevin Kopjak doesn't think about carbs or fat. He reads only 2 things on a nutrition label: the portion size and the calories. The strategy has helped him lose and keep off 100 pounds. "Counting calories seems to work for me, but it's a lot of discipline. When I first started, I had an Excel log, where I literally wrote everything I ate down." The past few decades have brought us diets like Atkins, Sugar Busters, The Zone, Slim Fast and Jenny Craig. But Calorie counting (one of the oldest means of weight loss) is making a comeback with news books, calorie counting sites and portable calorie readers.

An extremely low-calorie liquid diet - 170kg man loses 70kg
An extremely low-calorie liquid diet can help seriously obese patients lose almost half their body weight in a year. Doctors described the case of a 59-year-old morbidly obese man who weighed 169.5kg, who began a very low-calorie liquid diet and daily exercise, losing over 70kg in 12 months. The strict portion-controlled, calorie-precise diet comprised of meal-replacement formulas for 5 months. Low-fat meals were then added to his diet over the next 7 months. At his 1-year follow-up, the man had lost 43% of his weight.

High-Protein, Low-Fat, and Low-Carb diets suppress hunger
Many diets are based on changing the proportion of carbs, proteins, and fats one ingests as a method to promote weight loss. A new study could shed light on mechanisms by which different diets boost weight loss. This study examined how different nutrient types suppress ghrelin, the only known appetite-stimulating hormone. "We found that when fat is consumed, levels of ghrelin remain relatively high, which could in turn stimulate hunger. Protein consumption resulted in the greatest suppression of ghrelin... consumption of carbohydrates resulted in a strong ghrelin suppression initially, although subsequent ghrelin levels rebounded well above baseline."

Revealed: Most Effective Weight Loss Diet, at least in the short term
Scientists have shown that a high protein, low carb diet is most effective at decreasing hunger and boosting weight loss - at least in the short term. Healthy, obese men were given 2 diets. Both diets had a high protein content (30% of total energy) but they varied in the amount of carbohydrate: One diet was low in carbohydrate (4%) and the other had a moderate amount of carbohydrate (35%). "Our volunteers found both diets to be equally palatable, but they felt less hungry on the high-protein low-carbohydrate diet..."

Atkins boosts risk of cardiovascular disease
The low-carb Atkins diet that stormed last decade may not be the weight-loss juggernaut it once was, but it still has believers and even a new book. And the controversial diet that encourages high-fat meats and cheeses over breads and pastas is still generating questions from the medical community. A recent study says it might help drop pounds but also might hurt the heart. The group compared 3 eating regimens: Atkins, the low-carb and low-fat South Beach Diet and the vegetarian Ornish diet. Researchers concluded that Atkins alone puts people at higher risk of heart disease - and did it after only one month.

Low carb diets may stress body too much, studies find
For most of the past decade, there was much buzz about the Atkins and Zone diets. Both focus on quick ways to lose weight through high protein and low carbohydrate foods. However, Arizona State University scientists have been studying the diets since 2005, and find many biomarkers being negatively affected by the low carbohydrate consumption. "The downside of severely low carbohydrate intake is that dieters go in to what's called ketosis or the inefficiency of the body to oxidize fat," said Carol Johnston.

Salads Sabotaging Diet - More calories than cheeseburger and fries
I always get a salad; Yes, it has a little cheese on it, and some croutons. And I see an egg in between the fried chicken strips, right beneath the bacon. But hey, the dressing comes in its own wheelbarrow on the side. And remember: It's still not a Whopper. The fully loaded salad is an example of the fast food industry's response to consumer demand for healthier options. "A lot of these salads are a false perception." For example, a Southwest Taco Salad with reduced-fat dressing has 650 calories. Opt for the honey mustard dressing instead, and the calories climb to 820 - 30 more than a quarter-pound Double Stack cheeseburger and a small order of fries.

Cut Your Diet's Energy Density and Lose Weight
Want to lose weight? Focus on reducing the "energy density" of your diet, a study suggests. In simple terms, that means eating foods that contain a lot of water and few calories per portion, such as fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products. What's more, that approach can help you lose more weight than if you don't eat those foods. And if you reduce the energy density of your diet, you get to eat more, at least in volume. "The energy density of food refers to calories per gram. Energy density goes from zero to nine." Water has zero density while fat, which has 9 calories per gram, has a density of nine.

Feel full longer: Eating 2 eggs for breakfast help you lose weight
The key to losing weight could be as simple as having 2 eggs for breakfast. Scientists have shown that those who start their day with eggs can lose up to 2/3 more weight. The secret of the egg's success lies in its ability to make us feel full for longer than many other foods. The women were asked to eat either 2 eggs a day for breakfast, or have a bagel. The two meals contained the same number of calories. After 8 weeks of breakfasting, the slimmers who had eaten eggs had lost the most weight. It is not completely clear why eggs are so good at making us feel full but it is thought high protein content could play a large part.

Keep potatoes in your diet when you diet
Do you say no to potato salad because someone once said that potatoes are fattening? Is glycaemic index becoming your gauge for how you determine what to eat? If you answered "yes" then you have a healthy consciousness about what you put into your body, but you may also have been influenced by some of the myths that prevail one of our most wonderful natural sources of energy: the potato. Potatoes, on their own, contain a negligible amount of fat, no more that 0,1mg per potato, and potatoes are free of cholesterol. Like most pure foods, it is not the potato itself but the way in which it is prepared that can put fattening substances to your diet.

Super Foods: 7 that can add years, remove pounds
Foods that can not only help you lose weight, but extend your life would seem almost too good to be true, but a cardiovascular nutrition expert Dr. Ralph Felder says there are at least 7 that you can eat to your heart's content. Vegetables and fruits, garlic, red and white wine, fish, dark chocolate and nuts are the secrets to good health. "All of these together will lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart attack and kidney failure by 75% and that translates into 6.4 years extra bonus for you." Now, there are some caveats: The fish should be grilled or broiled, and the wine should be limited to 5 ounces.

Calorie Intake, Not Food Type, is key to Weight Loss
If you're trying to lose weight, calories count more than the types of food in your diet. The study shows that after a year, overweight people on a low-carb low-glycemic-index diet lost just as much weight as people on a reduced-fat, high-glycemic-index diet. "The present results suggest that a broad range of healthy diets can successfully promote weight loss.." Low-carb diet advocates say people are more likely to stay on Low-carb diets because they provide more of the foods people like to eat - The study offers some support for this. During the first 3 months, those in the high-glycemic-index group were less satisfied and had more desire for non-diet foods.

Foods Low in Energy Density Help Continued Weight Control
Emphasizing foods that fill you up while limiting calories seems to help with losing weight, and with keeping it off. "Energy density" refers to how many calories a food contains for a certain weight. For an equal number of calories, foods low in energy density will provide a larger portion and thus satisfy hunger more. One study evaluated the effect of energy density on long-term weight control. The 74 participants lost an average of 9 pounds during the program. Two years later, only 22% had regained more than 5% of their program-ending weight; 78% were still below their starting weight and had either continued losing weight or regained very little.

Dr. Gott's No Flour No Sugar Diet
An easy-to-follow plan for permanent weight loss and a healthy lifestyle is found between the covers of Dr. Peter Gott's book: No Flour, No Sugar Diet. You don't have to count points or fat grams. You do have to watch what the ingredients are in the food you buy. You might scoff and say "how easy that would be?" but if you read the labels of your groceries, you'd be surprised at the sugar that is put in almost all processed foods. When following a diet with no flour or no sugar, that pretty much leaves wholegrain rice, fresh fruits and vegetables and meats, as contenders for consumption. That is what nutritionists have been screaming all these years.

Atkins diet beats Zone diet, Learn diet and Ornish diet
A scientific study into the Atkins diet suggests that it can be one of the most effective ways for women to lose weight. Subjects on the Atkins regime had lost twice as much weight on average as women on 3 competing diets. 311 overweight women were asked to follow one of 4 regimes: the Atkins, Zone, Learn or Ornish diet. Women in the Atkins group also achieved larger reductions in body mass index BMI, triglycerides and blood pressure. However, amid increasing concern that devotees of Atkins diet miss out on vital nutrients, it has been supplanted by regimes such as the GI diet, which consists of foods that release glucose evenly.

Diet rich in black soya beans could help control weight
A diet rich in black soya beans could help control weight, lower fat and cholesterol levels, and aid in the prevention of diabetes. Yellow soya has already been hailed for its cholesterol lowering capabilities. However, Korean researchers has shown that black soya may be even more potent, and also prevents weight gain. David Bender thinks that the soya protein may be having an effect on fat metabolism in the liver and adipose tissue, reducing synthesis of new fatty acids and cholesterol. It is this metabolic effect that may explain the Asian use of black soya in the treatment of diabetes.

Healthy weight loss: Soup: reduce portion size, trim fat
Soup can be a boost as you try to stay fit and healthy. But look before you eat, because what's in the soup make a difference. Soup could be an ally for weight control, too. Portions have grown markedly in the last 20 years. Research suggests that starting a meal with soup may help reduce portion size. With few calories, soup brings a feeling of fullness and makes it easier to eat less in a meal. Soup can also benefit long-term health by serving as a vehicle to work more vegetables into meals. Tomato soup provides a serving of vegetables in the liquid itself, and then you can add a variety of vegetables.

For weight loss that really counts - count calories
Enough with the dieting advice. Here is what worked for 99% of 5,000 people who lost weight and kept off at least 30 pounds of it. Count calories. The successful dieters had various methods for counting their intake of calorie and fat grams, such as restricting intake of certain foods and eating smaller portions. More than 90% exercised regularly, mostly walking or doing something else equivalent of a one-hour brisk walk. And forget about skipping breakfast: Nearly 80% of the losers ate breakfast daily, usually cereal and fruit. Frequent visits to the scale helped too: 75% weighed in at least weekly.

Low-fat Foods Make Us Fat
Recent studies showed people eat an average of 28% more total calories when they eat low-fat snacks than regular ones. "People don't realize that low-fat foods are not always low-calorie foods." Fat is often replaced with sugar. Low-fat snacks are an average of 11% lower in calories, but people wrongly believe they are around 40% lower. "Stick with the regular version, but eat a little bit less. It's better for both your diet and your taste buds."

Many need more fiber in their diets
We all know dietary fiber is good for us, but many of us donĄ¯t know what it is. Most Americans donĄ¯t get enough fiber in their diets. The recommended intake is 20-38 grams of total fiber per day, with 25 grams being a realistic goal for most people. This is about the same amount of fiber that is found in 5 servings of either fruits or vegetables and one or two servings of either whole grains or beans. Unfortunately, the average American consumes 14 grams. Since fiber helps you digest food, if you donĄ¯t get enough in your diet, you can become constipated, develop hemorrhoids, or be prone to illnesses.

Does low-carb diet really work
In the 1970s the low-carb diet was made famous by Dr Atkins, but at the time rejected by most dieticians as dangerous nonsense. Now, millions are turning back to this effective, yet controversial weight-loss programme. Known as the Atkins diet, the regime is simple - cut down the intake of carbohydrate-rich foods, but eat as much protein and fat as you want. Carbs, found in the form of starches or sugars, are the primary energy sources and if unused are stored in the body as fat. The Atkins philosophy is based on the idea that a body starved of carbohydrates will resort to burning excess fat, a process known as ketosis.

Some high-fat diets may not harm heart
According to a study diets low in carbohydrates and higher in fat might not be bad for the heart - at least when compared with low-fat, high-carbohydrate diets that are sometimes advocated. Because some widely followed low-carb diets, such as the once popular Atkins diet, often encourage eating meat high in saturated fat, several medical groups have urged people to avoid them because of fears those regimens will lead to an increased risk of heart disease. Other diets that emphasize low-carbohydrate consumption include the South Beach Diet and the Zone.

Is a low-calorie diet the secret to longevity - restricted-calorie diet
We all know that cutting back on calories promotes weight loss, but does it also promote longevity? Many Americans seem to think so. Their beliefs are based on animal studies done as far back as the 1930s. The experiments show that eating 25%-40% fewer calories every day can extend animals' lifespan by up to 50%. The restricted-calorie diet limits the total calories a person consumes, while retaining a balance of nutrients, in the belief that that will slow down the aging process. This diet, which takes a lot of discipline, is not a weight-loss plan, although, that is one of its side effects.

A Cornwall man has lost 101kg in a year on a diet of Oxo cubes. Stephen Kay swapped fry-ups, pies, pasties and pints of lager for three bowls of hot broth a day. The dad-of-three, who is 189cm, weighed 196 kg. He devised his own diet made up of Oxo stock cubes, topped up with fruit and vegetables. Within 12 months he had slimmed down to 96kg and lost 60cm off his waist as his belt size shrank from 60 to 36.

Low-fat foods contribute to weight problems
People indulge a lot more in low-fat processed foods than in their regular counterparts, and overweight people seem especially vulnerable, according to research. Such products are designed to improve health, but they may actually contribute to weight problems, says Brian Wansink. "We're a nation of low-fat foods and high-fat people." Wansink, who has done studies on the topic, says some low-fat processed foods have an average of only 15% fewer calories than regular ones, but consumers think they have about 40% fewer calories.

How to lose that weight healthily - and why avoid high protein diet
If you need to lose weight, don't be tempted to embark on one of the many fad diets that advocate easy weight loss. One such diet plan is the high protein diet. While the weight loss achieved on this diet has got to be good, there are concerns about its effect on health. One reason why the high protein diet is so popular is that weight loss is rapid. Adopting long-term lifestyle changes that reduce your fat, sugar and calorie intake while increasing physical activity level are the best way to achieve sustainable weight loss.

Results seem to suggest that fat in the diet doesn't matter at all
Can people lose weight by cutting back on fat without changing their exercise habits or trying to reduce calories? For the group of women over age 50 in WHI study, the answer was no. If you cut your fat intake but substitute other foods to maintain the same calorie intake, you shouldn't expect to lose weight. In today's world of large portions simply eating healthy food without cutting back on your portion sizes and unnecessary eating is unlikely to cause weight loss. Creating enough of a change in your balance of calories consumed and burned to produce weight loss requires eating fewer calories and physical activity.

Low-calorie diet may do your body more harm than good
Are you on a low-calorie diet? You may be doing your body more harm than good. Instead, try gradual, small changes in diet and physical activity that will improve health and well-being. While very few diets teach healthy low-fat cooking, and dining-out strategies, many offer unrealistic recommendations and encourage health-threatening restrictions. These diets don't teach us the safest, most effective ways to exercise; they don't teach us how to deal with our cravings, or how to attend to our feelings of hunger. Eventually, we become tired, of the complexity, the hunger, the lack of energy, and deprivation. We quit the diets and gain back the weight we've lost.

Should You Be On The Dairy Diet?
Michael Zemel put 25 persons on a 24-week diet that lowered their intakes by 500 calories a day. Group A ate a mixture of foods that provided about 500 milligrams of calcium a day. Group B followed the same diet, but took two calcium pills a day, doubling their calcium intake. Group C achieved double calcium intake by adding dairy foods to their daily diet. Group A lost an average of 14.5 pounds, group B 18.9 pounds, and group C 24.4 pounds. Subjects on the normal diet achieved just 8% of their total fat loss from the belly region, but subjects in group C lost 66% of fat from the belly. This is like getting rock-hard abs without the crunches.

Fruit flush diet: Time for the weigh-in
For 3 days this week, volunteers gave the fruit flush diet a try. Health guru Jay Robb promises you can lose nine pounds in three days. None of us did that well, but we did see some results. The diet consists of Robb's protein mixes and your favorite fruits, plus the occasional salad with meat. "I lost eight pounds," Todd Valance said. It's the largest final loss reported, but it wasn't easy. "It was hard for me to manage. I was hungry. I did have a headache." The men lost more than the women in our group, and that became more definitive as the results came in.
