Weight Loss Diet: Healthy Eating, Losing Fat and Calories

Losing weight: Diet is the practice of eating in a regulated fashion to achieve a particular, long-term objective. The most common objective is loss of excess body fat. Weight-loss diets restrict the intake of specific foods to reduce body weight. What works to reduce body weight for one person will not necessarily work for another, due to metabolic differences and lifestyle factors. Today there are lot of quick weight loss products available, but not all of them are efficient.

Losing weight with a food diary - Writing down daily food intake can double weight loss
According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, dieters who keep a food diary can double their weight loss. The study followed 1,700 obese people over 6 months, and found out that those who wrote down everything they ate lost an average of 13lb. "Some eating habits are situational. For example, having tea and a chocolate biscuit while watching your favourite television programme. We do it on autopilot. Through the use of a food journal, we often become aware of patterns that are self-destructive," says nutritionist Azmina Govindji. And the new trend in food diaries is the photo diary.

Review of calorie-counting web sites - Track the calories you eat
A computer screen won't help you lose weight, but it can help you screen your caloric intake. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are graphed in no time. A variety of calorie-counting sites is waiting to track the food you consume. The premise is simple: Once you know what you're swallowing, you can fine-tune your diet. Whether you want to lose the beer belly or maintain your weight, it will be a lot easier if you literally watch what you're eating. "It's a good educational activity. I think everyone should do it just to realize how many calories are in food," said Irene Berman-Levine.

Dieters who kept daily food diaries are more successful in their weight loss
1,700 Kaiser Permanente study persons agreed to exercise and follow a healthy diet, but those who took the extra step of keeping track of what they ate got something of a booster charge in their weight loss. Overall, 2/3 of the study subjects lost 9 pounds or more during the 6-month study. But those who kept a food diary dropped up to 20 pounds. The food diaries helped people see where extra calories were coming from, and also to spot the hidden calories. "[Food diary] had a very big impact. If I was walking through the kitchen and wanted to grab a cookie or a brownie, I would think twice because I knew I had to write it down," said Julie Satterwhite.

How to count your calories
Kevin Kopjak doesn't think about carbs or fat. He reads only 2 things on a nutrition label: the portion size and the calories. The strategy has helped him lose and keep off 100 pounds. "Counting calories seems to work for me, but it's a lot of discipline. When I first started, I had an Excel log, where I literally wrote everything I ate down." The past few decades have brought us diets like Atkins, Sugar Busters, The Zone, Slim Fast and Jenny Craig. But Calorie counting (one of the oldest means of weight loss) is making a comeback with news books, calorie counting sites and portable calorie readers.

Record daily habits for successful weight maintenance
Keeping a log of eating and activity has long been the gold standard for effectively changing behavior to lose weight. Studies reveal that people who monitor food and exercise tend to be most successful. A standard food diary has a list of everything you eat and drink. The record also asks for information about how the food is prepared, the portion size, and the time and location of the meal. More detailed food logs may account the calories, fat or other nutritional content. If the goal is to become more aware of the effect of emotions on eating, make note of your mood each time you eat.

Diet diary - Keeping track of what you eat a great weight-loss tool
Research shows that a food journal or diary can be a great tool for weight management. Keeping a food journal can id bad eating patterns and support the behavior modification needed for successful weight loss. Food journals can also help to identify foods that trigger headaches, allergies and gastrointestinal distress. Basically, a food journal is an account of all foods consumed. It can be a simple list of the kinds and amounts of foods consumed, or it can be more in-depth and has eating location, calories consumed, mood and feelings before and after.

For weight loss that really counts - count calories
Enough with the dieting advice. Here is what worked for 99% of 5,000 people who lost weight and kept off at least 30 pounds of it. Count calories. The successful dieters had various methods for counting their intake of calorie and fat grams, such as restricting intake of certain foods and eating smaller portions. More than 90% exercised regularly, mostly walking or doing something else equivalent of a one-hour brisk walk. And forget about skipping breakfast: Nearly 80% of the losers ate breakfast daily, usually cereal and fruit. Frequent visits to the scale helped too: 75% weighed in at least weekly.

Don't Just Count calories. Plan
Many people are sloppy in calculating how many calories they eat. Up to 46% of people who are overweight underestimate what they eat by 300-400 calories per day. So what does work? Planning and portion control, experts say. Pre-measured food approach worked better than counting your own calories. Plan meals for the next day. Print the list and you've got a dietary plan to follow. Planning ahead helps you to stay on top of what you're eating and makes it more likely that you'll meet your calorie goals.
