World's Largest Exhibition on the French and Indian War
"Clash of Empires: The British, French and Indian War, 1754-1763" opens at the Smithsonian's Gallery, Dec. 15. The exhibition explores the 3-sided struggle for the possession of North America by the British, French and American Indians and its worldwide effects. More than 250 years ago, a tense struggle between Britain, France and American Indian nations for control of North America exploded into the French and Indian War. Clash of Empires tells the story of the war that gave George Washington his first taste of military experience and set American colonists on the road to revolution.

The War Before the Revolution - the French and Indian War
For most people, the French and Indian War is one of those foggy wars that seem to exist as fodder for history books written to bore the bejabbers out of sixth-graders. Most of us know only that it happened before the American Revolution, and involved the French, and the last of the Mohicans. The very phrase, "French and Indian War," is punch line material: "He hasn't had a hit movie since the French and Indian War." But this may change. The Civil War has always been popular, the Revolution has been on a hot streak, and now it may be the French and Indian War's turn. Thus the first thing we ask the historian at the new exhibit at the Smithsonian is "Who won?"
